The GEL-NYC we stock comes in one colourway, Cream White, and that single fact decides almost everything about how you dress it. Cream is a warm colour. Hold the shoe next to a cold pale grey jogger and it looks yellow. Hold it next to brown stone or maroon and it looks expensive. Same shoe, different neighbour.
So working out how to style ASICS GEL-NYC is really a question about temperature. Warm shoe, warm outfit, or warm shoe against proper black. The eight fits below all follow that logic, and every piece in them is stock we sell. If you are still deciding whether the shoe is right for you, our complete GEL-NYC guide covers fit, price and how it compares to the Kayano 14 before you spend £189.99.
One more thing before the outfits. The GEL-NYC sits lower to the ground than the Kayano 14, so it needs a different hem and a different sock. Read the rules first, they save you a wasted wear.
Four rules for a warm-toned suede trainer
1. Match the temperature, not the colour. You do not need cream clothes to wear a cream shoe. You need warm clothes. Cream, brown stone, maroon and black all sit on the warm side or are neutral enough to take it. Cold pale grey and icy white are the two that fight it. If you want grey, go for a deeper smoke grey and mean it.
2. Lower shoe, shorter break. The Cream White GEL-NYC does not have the tall midsole of a Kayano 14. A jogger that pools over it swallows the shoe. Aim for the hem to touch the collar with a single soft break, or stop above the ankle bone with a visible sock.
3. Sock colour is part of the outfit. A cream shoe with a bright white sports sock looks like two different whites arguing. Use an off-white or cream sock with cream and brown, and a black sock with black. With shorts, a crew sock in a matching tone. With full-length trousers, low or invisible.
4. Suede and weather do not mix. The overlays on the GEL-NYC are suede and leather over mesh, and cream suede marks fast. Save it for dry days and pavements. If you get caught out, dry it slowly and brush it, and read our guide to cleaning the GEL-NYC without damaging the suede or the cream before you reach for anything wet.
Eight outfits built around the Cream White GEL-NYC
1. Cream tonal summer: Cream Core set, cream sock, dry pavement
The obvious pairing and still the best one on a warm day. The 'Cream' Core T-Shirt Set is a shade lighter than the shoe, which is what you want. Exact matches look like a uniform. A one-step difference looks planned. Keep the jogger hem sat on the shoe with one break, and wear an off-white sock so there is no bright white flash at the ankle. This is the fit that shows why cream sits at the top of our note on which ASICS sets go with the cream GEL-NYC.
2. Brown stone weekend: Brown Stone vest set and a black half-zip
Brown stone is the colour the GEL-NYC was waiting for. It is warm, it is a shade or two darker than the shoe, and it makes the cream read as the light in the outfit rather than the whole outfit. Wear the vest set as it comes on a warm weekend, then throw the black half-zip over it when the temperature drops after five. The half-zip adds a hard edge that stops the earth tones going soft. Cream sock, hem with a single break.
3. Maroon autumn: Maroon Core set with the cream shoe as the break
Maroon and cream is a combination that has been in menswear for a long time because it works. The maroon is deep enough to hold its own against a light shoe, and warm enough that the cream does not turn yellow beside it. This is the fit for October, dry leaves and a walk to the pub. Wear a black sock, not cream, so the shoe reads as its own object against a dark leg. Hem just touching, no pooling.
4. All black with a cream shoe as the point of light
Black head to toe and one cream shoe at the bottom is the sharpest thing on this list, and the least forgiving. The shoe has to be clean. Not clean-ish. Cream against black shows every scuff on the midsole and every mark on the suede. Get that right and the outfit does the rest. Black tee set, black sock, and let the jogger hem stop just above the shoe so there is a sliver of sock and a clean line down to the cream. It reads as intentional in a way that all-black with a white shoe never quite does.
5. Tracksuit airport: Black Core Tracksuit for a long day of sitting
The GEL-NYC feels firmer underfoot than the Kayano 14, but for an airport day it has one big advantage: it is low, so it slides off and on at security without a fight. Full black tracksuit, low black sock, and the shoe becomes the only light thing in the outfit. Cuffed tracksuit bottoms usually sit right on the collar of a low shoe, which is exactly the length you want. Bring the jacket zipped up for the plane and open at arrivals. Browse the rest of the ASICS tracksuits if you want a second option.
6. Vest set gym: Black vest set and a crew sock
Be honest with yourself here. The GEL-NYC is a retro runner, not a training shoe, so this is the walk-to-the-gym and mobility-day fit rather than a heavy-squat fit. The black vest set with the shorts hem well above the shoe gives you a lot of visible sock, so choose it properly. A black crew sock ties the shorts to the shoe. A cream crew sock ties the shoe to the top half. Both work. A mid-height white sports sock does not.
7. Smoke grey, on purpose: the deliberate contrast fit
Rule one says cold grey fights cream. Smoke grey is the exception because it is a warm, soft grey with brown in it rather than blue. Put the Smoke Grey set with the GEL-NYC and the contrast is deliberate: a muted, slightly moody top half and a warm light shoe underneath. It works because it is clearly a choice. What does not work is a pale, cold, athletic grey that turns the cream yellow by comparison. Cream sock, hem with a break.
8. Woven pant evening: black woven pant, black windrunner, cream shoe
The smartest version of the GEL-NYC. The Black Core Woven Pant has a cleaner drape than a jogger, so it falls straight to the shoe rather than gathering at the cuff. Add the black windrunner and you have a fit that works for dinner, a bar, or anywhere you would feel underdressed in a full set. Black low sock. Hem should just kiss the collar of the shoe. If you want to soften it, swap the woven pant for the steel grey version and accept a touch more contrast at the ankle. The Cream White colourway up close post shows how the shoe looks against a dark trouser in more detail.

Three mistakes people make with the GEL-NYC
Cold grey by accident. This is the number one. Somebody buys the cream shoe, puts it with the pale grey jogger they wear every day, and wonders why the shoe suddenly looks off-white and tired. It is not the shoe. Cold grey pulls cream towards yellow. Either commit to smoke grey as a deliberate contrast, or move to cream, brown, maroon or black.
Cream shoe in the rain. Cream suede is the least weather-proof material on any trainer we sell. One wet walk home and the toe overlays are two shades darker than the heel. Check the forecast. If you want an ASICS Gel trainer for wet days, that is not what this shoe is for, and our post on which ASICS Gel trainers go with which set covers the darker options.
Cream on cream with no break. Tonal is good. Tonal with the jogger pooled over the shoe so the whole lower half is one cream blob is not. Give the shoe a gap: a break at the hem, a different sock tone, or a black half-zip up top. The eye needs a line to follow.
Building your own GEL-NYC outfit
Start with temperature. Pick warm (cream, brown stone, maroon), black, or smoke grey on purpose. Then pick the sock: cream with warm, black with black, crew if the leg is short. Then pick the hem: single break on a full-length pant, or cropped above the ankle with the sock showing. That is the whole method. If you have done those three and the fit still feels wrong, the shoe is probably dirty.
If you would rather see the combinations already made, the full fits collection pairs sets and shoes that already work, and our guide to styling an ASICS set across 8 full fits covers the same thinking from the set side. Own more than one Gel trainer? The same logic, adjusted for a taller shoe, is in how to style the Gel-Kayano 14, and for the lower-profile suede pair see how to style the GEL-1130.
Quick answers
What colours go with the ASICS GEL-NYC Cream White?
Cream, brown stone, maroon and black first. Smoke grey works as a deliberate contrast. Cold pale grey and bright white are the two to avoid, because they make the cream look yellow.
Can you wear the GEL-NYC with shorts?
Yes, and it suits it because the shoe is low. Wear a crew sock in cream or black rather than a white sports sock, and keep the shorts hem well clear of the shoe.
Is the GEL-NYC too low for joggers?
No, but the hem matters more than it does with a chunkier shoe. Aim for a single break at the collar or crop above the ankle. A pooled hem hides the shoe.
Which socks go with a cream trainer?
Off-white or cream socks with warm outfits, black socks with black outfits. Low or invisible under full-length trousers, crew with shorts. Avoid a mid-height bright white sock in every case.
