A coordinated set does most of the work for you. Same fabric top and bottom, same colour, no decisions to make at 7am. The problem is that a lot of people stop right there, pull on whatever trainers were nearest the door, and then wonder why the whole thing looks flat.
This post is the styling half of the job. If you are still choosing which one to buy, the complete UK buying guide to ASICS sets covers fit, fabric and colour first. If you already own one, here is how to style an ASICS set eight different ways, with the trainer choice named every time.
Gym, dog walk, pub, airport, BBQ, evening out, desk, five-a-side. One fit each, all built from pieces we stock.
Five styling rules to get right first
- Tonal beats clashing. Keep the trainer in the same colour family as the set, or one clean step lighter. A loud shoe under a loud set fights itself and you end up looking like two halves of different outfits.
- Sock height is a real decision. Crew socks with shorts, ankle socks with woven pants. White crew at mid-calf under a 7" short reads deliberate. A trainer sock under a full-length pant is invisible, which is what you want there.
- The half-zip goes over the tee, never under. Set tee first, half-zip on top, zip pulled about a third of the way down. That gives you colour at the collar and stops the top half looking like one solid block.
- Size up the shorts, not the top. If you want a looser leg, take the bottoms up a size and leave the tee true. Sizing the whole set up drops the shoulder seam halfway down your arm. Check the Tempo sizing guide before you commit.
- Let one thing be loud. Bright set, quiet trainers. Quiet set, loud trainers. Not both.
If you want the colour question settled before you shop, we ranked every ASICS Core set colourway for everyday wear, and the results are fairly blunt about which ones earn their place.
The 8 full fits
1. The all-black default (evening out)
The one you fall back on with twenty minutes and somewhere to be. Black hides everything and photographs well under bad pub lighting. Swap the set shorts for a woven pant if the venue is smart, then finish with a silver-flecked trainer so the fit has one point of light in it.
- ASICS Black Core T-Shirt Set, £74.99 (price correct at time of writing)
- ASICS Black Core Woven Pant as the smarter swap
- ASICS 'Black/Pure Silver' Gel Kayano 14
- Black ankle socks, sitting just below the collar of the shoe
2. Cream and Kayano (meeting mates)
Daytime, no agenda, four hours in a beer garden. Cream is the softest thing in the range to look at and it makes almost any grey trainer work. Go graphite so the shoe grounds the fit instead of vanishing into it, and pull the socks up rather than scrunching them.
- ASICS 'Cream' Core T-Shirt Set
- ASICS 'Grey Graphite' Gel Kayano 14
- White crew socks, mid-calf
3. Maroon on maroon (summer BBQ)
Someone else's garden, warm evening, colour without shouting. Maroon is the most forgiving non-neutral we carry because it sits close to brown and reads warm rather than bright. Put an oyster or stone trainer under it and the whole fit goes soft. Skip black here, it cuts the leg off at the ankle.
- ASICS 'Maroon' Core T-Shirt Set
- ASICS 'Oyster Grey' GEL-NYC
- Off-white or cream ankle socks
4. The airport uniform (travel days)
Long day, cold plane, security queue. Full-length bottoms so you are not sat in shorts at 30,000 feet, and a half-zip you can shed without unpacking anything. Smoke grey is the easiest colour here to layer over, and at £69.99 it is the cheapest tee set we stock. Easy-on trainers matter more here than anywhere else.
- ASICS 'Smoke Grey' Core T-Shirt Set
- ASICS Black Core Half-Zip, worn over the tee
- ASICS 'Glacier Grey' GEL-1130
- Thin ankle socks, nothing chunky
5. Seven a.m. dog walk (wet grass edition)
Nobody is looking, but you still want to feel dressed. Windrunner over whatever you slept in, woven pant, done. Matching the grey windrunner to the grey pant gives you a tonal top-to-bottom in about ninety seconds, then a darker trainer keeps the mud off the picture.
- ASICS 'Steel Grey' Core Windrunner, £59.99
- ASICS 'Steel Grey' Core Woven Pant
- ASICS 'Shark Skin' GEL-1130
- Ankle socks, hidden
6. Green light (five-a-side)
Turning up and going home, not the game itself. A bright set works because you only wear it either side of the pitch, and green is the one colour here that looks better in daylight than under a floodlight. Keep the trainer white so the green stays the loudest thing, and wear crew socks because you will be pulling boots on and off.
- ASICS 'Vital Green' Core T-Shirt Set
- ASICS 'White/Smoke Grey' GEL-NYC
- White crew socks
7. Vest set and go (the gym)
Vest sets exist for exactly this. Shoulders free, shorts that move, nothing bunching at the waist on a bench. Black is the safe pick, with a sleeved swap below if you would rather not train in a vest. Throw the windrunner on for the walk home.
- ASICS Black Core Vest Set
- ASICS Black Core Windrunner for the commute
- ASICS 'Lazer Orange' Core T-Shirt Set as the sleeved alternative
8. Desk to doorstep (working from home)
The test for a work-from-home fit is whether you can answer the door in it. A vest set on its own fails that. Add a woven pant and you pass without giving up any comfort. Brown stone is the warmest neutral we stock and it stops the whole thing reading as gym kit.
- ASICS 'Brown Stone' Core Vest Set
- ASICS 'Aegean Blue' Core Vest Set, £59.99, the cheaper option with a bit of colour
- Black Core Woven Pant, worn loose
- Whichever GEL-1130 is already by the door
If a few of those look suspiciously similar, that is the point. Five well-chosen pieces cover most of a week, which is the thinking behind our five-piece ASICS capsule wardrobe.
The three mistakes people make
- Buying the set, then guessing the trainer. The shoe is over half the fit visually and usually the most expensive thing you have on. Decide it at the same time. Our breakdown of which Gel trainers go with which set pairs them up properly.
- Tight top, baggy bottoms. Or the reverse. Pick a silhouette and hold it. If the shorts are relaxed, the tee needs a bit of room in the body too.
- Treating a set as gym-only. These are cut to be worn out. The full explainer on the ASICS Core T-Shirt Set goes through what the cut does off the treadmill.
Building your own fit
- Pick the occasion, then the length. Shorts for anything warm or active, woven pants for anything cold or public.
- Pick the set colour. Neutral if you want three outfits out of it, bright if you want one great one.
- Pick the trainer inside that colour family. Browse the ASICS trainers and hold the shoe next to the set on screen. If your eye jumps between them, it is wrong.
- Add one layer. Half-zip or windrunner, over the top, zip down.
- Set the sock height last. Smallest decision, the one people notice.

Quick answers
Can you wear an ASICS set as normal clothes?
Yes, and most people wear theirs far more off the gym floor than on it. A tee set with a woven pant and a clean trainer is a normal outfit, not sportswear.
What trainers go best with a black ASICS set?
Anything black, silver or graphite. A Black/Pure Silver Kayano 14 or a Shark Skin GEL-1130 both keep it tonal. Avoid a bright colourway unless you want the shoe to be the whole point.
Should I size up in an ASICS set?
Only if you specifically want a looser leg, and then only on the bottoms. Sizing the top up drops the shoulder seam. Check the product page and the sizing guide before you order.
Can the half-zip go under the set tee?
No. It sits over the top, zip a third of the way down so the tee shows at the neck. Underneath it bunches and you lose the collar detail entirely.
