Cream suede does not forgive. A grey trainer hides a fortnight of city wear. A cream one shows the first wet pavement, the first brush against a car door, the first coffee splash on the toe. So if you want to know how to clean ASICS GEL-NYC in the Cream White colourway, the honest answer starts before the first wear, not after the first mark.
This guide is the practical version. It covers the suede overlays, the leather and mesh panels, the midsole, laces and insoles, drying, and the winter salt problem that catches most people out. Why the GEL-NYC needs the most care of the three
Of the three ASICS Gel trainers we stock, the GEL-NYC is the one that punishes neglect. Two reasons.
First, the materials. The original GEL-NYC uses suede overlays, which is unusual for a retro-style release, and the Cream White GEL-NYC at £189.99 combines those with a leather and mesh upper. Suede, leather and mesh each want a different cleaning method, and the wrong one on the wrong panel does damage.
Second, the colour. Cream is lighter than the Sharkskin GEL-1130 and less uniform than a tonal white Kayano 14. Dirt has nowhere to hide. Some of the midsole advice in our Kayano 14 cleaning guide carries over. The suede rules do not.
What you need
- A soft-bristled brush (a dedicated suede brush is best, a clean soft toothbrush will do)
- A suede eraser (a clean pencil eraser works in a pinch)
- Mild soap or a small amount of washing-up liquid
- Cold water in a bowl
- Two clean microfibre cloths
- Old newspaper or plain kitchen paper for stuffing
- A suede and nubuck protector spray
- Optional: a magic eraser for the midsole only

Protect before you wear
This is the single most important step for a cream suede shoe, and it is the one most people skip because the shoes look perfect out of the box.
Before the first wear, take the trainers outside or to a well-ventilated room. Hold the protector spray at the distance stated on the can and give the whole upper an even, light coat. Do not soak it. Let it dry fully, then apply a second light coat. Leave the shoes overnight before wearing.
Protector spray does not make suede waterproof. It stops water and dirt sinking into the nap in the first few seconds, so you can brush off a mark rather than live with it. Reapply every four to six weeks if you wear the shoes regularly, and after every deep clean.
Cleaning the suede overlays step by step
- Wait until the shoe is dry. Wet suede smears. Stuff with paper and leave for a few hours if needed.
- Dry brush the whole overlay. Use the soft brush in short strokes, all in one direction. This lifts surface dust and raises the nap. Most everyday marks come off here.
- Use the suede eraser on stubborn marks. Rub gently in small circles over scuffs and dark patches. Brush away the crumbs. Repeat rather than pressing harder.
- For anything greasy, use minimal moisture. Dampen a cloth in cold water with a drop of mild soap, wring it until nearly dry, and dab the mark. Do not rub. Do not soak. Blot with a dry cloth straight away.
- Let it dry naturally. Away from radiators and sunlight.
- Brush the nap back up. Once bone dry, brush the whole panel again in one direction so the texture is even and no clean patch stands out.
- Reapply protector spray. A deep clean strips whatever protection was left.
Never submerge suede, never put it under a running tap, and never use a stiff brush. Each of those flattens or discolours the nap and there is no undoing it.
Leather and mesh panels
The leather panels are more forgiving. Wipe them with a cloth dampened in cold water and a small amount of mild soap. Work in gentle circles, then go over with a clean damp cloth to lift the soap, then dry with the second cloth. Do not saturate the leather, and do not let soapy water run down onto the suede next to it. Work panel by panel with the shoe tilted so any drips fall away from the suede.
The mesh needs a soft brush and cold water only. Dip the brush, shake off the excess, and brush lightly along the weave. Mesh traps fine dust that shows as a grey tinge on cream. Warm water and harsh detergent can yellow pale mesh over time, so keep it cold and mild.

Midsole and outsole
The white midsole is where a toothbrush earns its keep. Mix a little mild soap into cold water, dip the toothbrush, and scrub the midsole in small circles. Rinse the brush often. Wipe with a damp cloth, then dry.
For scuffs the toothbrush cannot shift, a magic eraser works, but sparingly. It is mildly abrasive and repeated use dulls the finish. Use it damp, press lightly, and keep it well away from the suede and the printed branding.
The outsole can take more. Knock the pair together outside to drop dried mud, then use the toothbrush and soapy water on the tread.
Laces and insoles
Take both out before you start. Laces go in a bowl of warm soapy water for twenty minutes, then a rinse and a hang to dry. Clean laces make the whole shoe look fresher.
Insoles get a wipe with a damp soapy cloth, then a wipe with clean water, then a full air dry before they go back in. Do not soak them. If they smell, a dusting of bicarbonate of soda overnight, tapped out in the morning, works.
Drying without warping the shoe
Stuff each shoe loosely with paper. Change it after an hour if it is wet through. Leave the pair somewhere with airflow, at room temperature, out of direct sunlight. A cream shoe left on a sunny windowsill can yellow unevenly. A cream shoe left on a radiator can crack the leather and stiffen the suede.
Never machine wash, never tumble dry, never use a hairdryer. The upper materials, the glue and the midsole all react badly to heat, and the shoe will not go back to its original shape.
Cream-specific notes and salt marks
Cream hides less than you hope. On a dark suede, a good brush resets the shoe. On cream suede, some marks fade to a shadow rather than disappearing. That is why prevention wins. Avoid wet grass, avoid rain when you can, and rotate the GEL-NYC with another pair rather than wearing it every day. Suede that gets a day off dries fully and holds its colour better. Winter brings salt. Gritted pavements leave white tide marks along the sole edge and the lower suede. Deal with them the same day. Dab, do not rub, with a cloth wrung out in cold water until the salt line lifts. Blot dry. Stuff with paper and leave to dry naturally. Once dry, brush the nap back up. Leaving salt to sit for a week is how you get a permanent stiff patch.
What not to do
- Do not put them in the washing machine, even on a delicate cycle
- Do not use bleach or anything with a whitening agent on the upper
- Do not use hot water anywhere on the shoe
- Do not scrub suede with a stiff or wire brush
- Do not use a magic eraser on suede or leather
- Do not dry them near a radiator, in sunlight or with a hairdryer
- Do not spray protector on a dirty or damp shoe (you seal the dirt in)
- Do not wear them on wet grass or in heavy rain if you can help it

Can you machine wash the ASICS GEL-NYC?
No. The suede overlays, leather panels and glued midsole all suffer in a machine. Hand clean panel by panel as described above.

Will suede cleaner damage the leather or mesh?
