Most people get the set right and the shoes wrong. They buy a clean two-piece, pull on whatever trainers are by the door, and wonder why the fit looks flat in photos. Wearing ASICS Gel trainers with sets is not one single look, it is three quite different looks, and the pair you pick decides which one you get.
Tempo stocks three Gel silhouettes: the Gel Kayano 14, the GEL-NYC and the GEL-1130. This post explains what each one actually does to an outfit in plain terms, then gives you a pairing matrix so you can match a specific trainer to a specific set colourway. If you are still deciding on the set itself, start with our complete UK buying guide to ASICS sets and come back here for the footwear half.
No made-up tech talk, no stack heights, no release history. Just how they look on foot with a set on.
Why the trainer decides the fit
A set is a controlled thing. Top and bottom already agree with each other, which is the point of buying them together. That leaves the trainer as the only loose variable, and it carries far more visual weight than it would with jeans.
Think of it as a volume dial. A chunky, multi-tone runner turns the outfit up. A clean, low-key one turns it down and lets the set do the talking. Neither is better, but decide which you want before you leave the house.
Two rules follow. If the set is loud, the trainer should not be. If the set is quiet, the trainer is where you spend your personality. There is more on outfit construction in our guide to styling an ASICS set across eight full fits, and you can see the whole footwear range in the ASICS trainers collection.
The Gel Kayano 14
This is the loud one. The Kayano 14 is chunky, technical looking and heavy on panelling and overlays. On foot it reads as a proper runner rather than a fashion trainer wearing running clothes.
That makes it an anchor. Put it with a plain set and the trainer becomes the focal point, which is usually what you want. It also sits wide, so it fills out the bottom of a jogger leg instead of looking lost under it.
- 'Fjord Grey' Gel Kayano 14, £199.99. White mesh with grey overlays. The most neutral of the three and the easiest to wear with anything grey, black or stone.
- 'White Light Navy' Gel Kayano 14, £194.99. Two-tone white and light navy. The navy gives a black or maroon set an anchor without adding a new colour to the fit.
- 'White Ivory' Gel Kayano 14, £189.99. Tonal white. The cleanest of the three, and the one that gives a grey or black set a crisp contrast without shouting.
The GEL-NYC
Softer than the Kayano, and more everyday. The GEL-NYC still has bulk to it, but the shapes are rounder and the tones blend rather than contrast. It looks less like you have just come off a treadmill.
Wear it when you want the outfit to look considered without the trainer shouting. It handles cream, stone and off-white sets particularly well because it shares that warm, washed-out register instead of fighting it.
- 'Cream White' GEL-NYC, £189.99. Warm cream and white, leather and mesh upper. Works with almost every colourway in the range and comes into its own with lighter sets in summer.
The GEL-1130
The quiet one. The GEL-1130 sits lower and reads cleaner than the other two, so it slips under a tracksuit hem without announcing itself. If a chunky runner has ever made a smart set look scruffy, this is the fix.
It works with woven pants, shorts and normal trousers in a way a Kayano does not always manage. Prices sit lower too, which makes it the sensible first pair for a lot of people.
- 'Sharkskin' GEL-1130, £169.99. Mid grey suede and mesh, slightly cooler in tone. The default choice.
- 'White Silver' GEL-1130, £149.99. Palest of the three and the most summer-leaning.
- 'Cream Black' GEL-1130, £139.99. Warm cream with black detailing, and the cheapest Gel trainer in the range. Sits with cream, stone and black sets without trying.

The pairing matrix
Best pick first, second choice after. The reasoning column tells you why, so you can adapt it if we are out of your size.
| Set | Best trainer | Second choice | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| Black Core T-Shirt Set | 'White Light Navy' Kayano 14 | 'Sharkskin' GEL-1130 | Black set is a blank canvas, so let the two-tone panelling do the work. The navy stops the white looking stark against black. The 1130 if you want it smarter. |
| 'Cream' Core T-Shirt Set | 'Cream White' GEL-NYC | 'Cream Black' GEL-1130 | Warm tones want warm tones. A cold grey next to cream looks dirty rather than tonal. |
| 'Maroon' Core T-Shirt Set | 'White Light Navy' Kayano 14 | 'Cream White' GEL-NYC | Maroon is already the colour in the fit. The navy anchors it without competing, and navy and maroon have always got on. |
| 'Vital Green' Core T-Shirt Set | 'Sharkskin' GEL-1130 | 'Fjord Grey' Kayano 14 | Loud set, quiet shoe. Grey underneath lets the green be the only thing talking. |
| 'Lazer Orange' Core T-Shirt Set | 'White Silver' GEL-1130 | 'White Ivory' Kayano 14 | Orange needs something pale and calm underneath it or the whole fit goes traffic cone. |
| 'Smoke Grey' Core T-Shirt Set | 'White Ivory' Kayano 14 | 'Fjord Grey' Kayano 14 | Grey set, so the trainer should be noticeably lighter. Clean white is the contrast, Fjord Grey is the tonal route if you want it quieter. |
| 'Brown Stone' Core Vest Set | 'Cream White' GEL-NYC | 'Cream Black' GEL-1130 | Stone and cream is the safest pairing in the whole range. Hard to get wrong. |
| 'Aegean Blue' Core Vest Set | 'White Silver' GEL-1130 | 'Sharkskin' GEL-1130 | Blue is already the loud part. A pale or mid grey underneath keeps it clean rather than adding a second colour. |
| Black Core Tracksuit | 'Sharkskin' GEL-1130 | 'White Light Navy' Kayano 14 | A full tracksuit is already a lot of fabric. The lower shape keeps the leg line clean. |
If you want the sets ranked before you commit, we have gone through every Core set colourway ranked for everyday wear. And if you are still deciding between a two-piece and a full tracksuit, the tracksuit versus set comparison covers it.
Tonal vs contrast
Tonal means the trainer sits in the same colour family as the set. Grey on grey, cream on cream, stone on warm cream. It photographs well, but it goes flat if every piece is the same lightness. Make the trainer noticeably lighter or darker than the set, not just a different shade of the same thing.
Contrast means the trainer deliberately does not match. That works when the set is plain and the contrast is one colour, not three. The White Ivory Kayano with a Smoke Grey set is contrast done properly. A White Light Navy Kayano with the Aegean Blue set is contrast done badly, because now two blues are arguing.
Rule of thumb: one loud thing per fit. If the set has a colour, the trainer should not, and the other way round.
Socks and hem
Socks matter more with a chunky runner, because the shoe already sits high on the ankle. A white crew sock with a Kayano 14 pushes the fit sporty. A black or tonal sock keeps it neat. Neither is wrong, but pick one on purpose.
Hem break is the other half. Too long and the jogger swallows the trainer, which wastes £200 of shoe. Too short and it looks like you have outgrown the set. Aim for the hem just kissing the top of the trainer with a slight bunch, so the silhouette shows but the leg line stays unbroken.
- Kayano 14: sits widest, so leave a touch more clearance. Let the shoe be seen.
- GEL-NYC: forgiving. Works with a slight stack or a clean break.
- GEL-1130: the lowest profile, so it can take a longer hem without disappearing.
Caps, bags and the small stuff that finishes a fit live in the accessories collection, and if you would rather buy set and trainers together, the full fits collection does the pairing for you.
If you can only buy one pair
Buy the 'Sharkskin' GEL-1130. It is the least fussy of the seven, it goes with more of the range than anything else, and it is the pair you will actually reach for on a Tuesday.
Want a statement instead? Go 'Fjord Grey' Kayano 14. It is the one people notice, and it turns a simple black two-piece into a proper fit. For the middle ground, the 'Cream White' GEL-NYC matches more sets than anything else here. Planning a full rotation? Quick answers
Can you wear Gel Kayano 14s with a slim tracksuit?
Yes, but mind the hem. The Kayano is wide, so a very slim leg over it creates a bulb shape at the ankle. Either roll the hem slightly or go with the GEL-1130 for a cleaner line.
Do the trainers have to match the set exactly?
No, and exact matching often looks worse. Aim for the same temperature, warm with warm and cool with cool, rather than the same colour.
Which Gel trainer is best for summer sets?
The paler options. 'White Silver' GEL-1130 and 'Cream White' GEL-NYC both suit vest sets and shorts better than the chunkier Kayanos.
Is one pair enough for a full ASICS rotation?
One neutral grey pair covers most of it. A second pair only earns its place if it does something different, so pair a quiet shoe with a loud one rather than buying two greys.
