Stand a GEL-1130 next to a Gel-Kayano 14 and the difference is obvious from across the room. The Kayano is tall and silver and wants to be looked at. The 1130 sits lower, the suede soaks up light, and it looks like it belongs to the outfit rather than leading it. That is why it is easier to dress.
Most people asking how to style ASICS GEL 1130 already know it goes with a grey set. What they miss is that a quieter shoe lets you do things the louder pairs cannot: a full tracksuit, a maroon set, a woven pant with the hem sitting clean on the collar. If you are still choosing a pair, our complete GEL-1130 guide covers fit, price and the three colourways before you spend £140 to £170.
Every piece below is stock we sell. Copy any outfit as written, or swap in the colourway you own.
Four rules for dressing a low-profile trainer
1. A quiet shoe can carry a loud set. With the Kayano 14 the advice is to keep everything else plain. The 1130 flips that. Suede, a lower midsole and no silver panels mean the shoe steps back, so a maroon set or a full tracksuit can be the main event. One loud thing, not two, but it does not have to be the shoe.
2. Use the lower profile. A lower midsole lets a full-length hem sit on the collar with one clean break rather than bunching. That is why the 1130 works with woven pants and tracksuit bottoms where chunkier pairs struggle. Straight or slightly relaxed leg, hem on the shoe, done.
3. Sock height matters more on a lower shoe. With less shoe covering the ankle, the sock is on show. Low or invisible with joggers and pants. Crew with shorts, plain white or black. Avoid a mid-height sports sock, because on a low shoe it looks like the sock is doing half the work.
4. Mind the suede in rain. All three Tempo colourways are suede and mesh. Suede gives the shoe its muted look, and it is the part that marks in wet weather. Save Cream Black and White Silver for dry days, lean on the Sharkskin grey when the forecast is iffy, and read our guide on cleaning the GEL-1130's suede, mesh and midsole before you need it rather than after.
Eight outfits built around the GEL-1130
1. Grey-on-grey tonal: Smoke Grey set with Sharkskin
This is the pairing that sells the shoe. Sharkskin is a soft mid grey and the Smoke Grey set sits a shade warmer, so the outfit reads as one tone from shoulder to sole with a small shift at the ankle. A Kayano would break the run of grey with its silver; the 1130 does not. Jogger hem on the collar with one break, low sock, no other colour anywhere.
2. Cream summer: Cream set with Cream Black
The Cream Black 1130 is a cream shoe with black detailing, and against a cream set that black becomes the only dark point in the outfit. That is enough contrast to stop head-to-toe cream washing out in strong light. Wear the shorts from the set with a plain white crew sock, or push the jogger up slightly so a sliver of ankle shows. Suede plus cream plus July means one thing: check the sky before you leave.
3. All-black evening: black woven pant, black tee, White Silver
A black woven pant hangs straighter than a jogger and needs a shoe that lets the hem land cleanly, which the lower 1130 midsole does. White Silver is the pair because a tonal white shoe under black gives contrast without a second colour, and the silver detailing catches just enough light to look considered. Low sock so the pant runs straight into the shoe. Wear the tee from the black set up top and save the joggers. This is the smartest thing you can do with a set and a trainer for a table booking or a late bar.
4. Tracksuit airport: Black Core Tracksuit with Sharkskin
A full tracksuit for a flight is heavy, dark and layered, and a lower shoe keeps it from looking bulky at the bottom. Sharkskin lifts the black without adding a white shoe that picks up every scuff between check-in and baggage reclaim. Hem on the collar with one break, low sock, top zipped for the plane. Other base colours in the ASICS tracksuits range work on the same logic.

5. Gym vest set: Black vest set with White Silver
The 1130 is the trainer in the range that looks most at home in an actual gym, because it sits closer to the ground and does not shout. A black vest set is a straight uniform, and the White Silver pair gives one clean point at the bottom. Crew sock with the shorts, plain white so sock and shoe read as one block. It gets you through the food shop afterwards without looking like you came straight from a bench.

6. Brown stone weekend: Brown Stone vest set with Cream Black
Brown, stone and cream is a warm palette that a bright white trainer would cut through. The Cream Black 1130 sits inside it instead: the cream upper matches the stone in the set and the black detailing picks up the darker brown, so nothing is fighting. Plain white crew sock. This is the 1130 at its best, disappearing into a good set of colours rather than leading them.

7. Maroon autumn: Maroon set with Sharkskin
Maroon is the loud set in the Core range, and this is rule one in practice. Put it on with a silver-heavy chunky trainer and you have two things asking for attention. Put it on with the Sharkskin 1130 and the grey suede sits under the deep red like a neutral, so the maroon gets to be the outfit. Jogger hem with a break, low sock, no cap or bag in a third colour.

8. Shorts and half-zip transitional: half-zip, grey 7" shorts, White Silver
April and October are the months for a half-zip on top and shorts below, and the 1130 suits that split better than a taller shoe because a low trainer under a bare shin does not look oversized. Black half-zip, grey 7" woven shorts, White Silver 1130. Crew sock pulled up, white or black, never a colour. The 7" length is right; a shorter short with a low shoe leaves too much leg between the two.

Three mistakes that ruin a GEL-1130 fit
Treating it like a chunky shoe. The 1130 does not need the outfit to step back the way the Kayano 14 does. Dress it in flat black and grey every time and you are wasting its main advantage. Bring the maroon set out, wear the tracksuit, do the woven pant. Our post on styling the Gel-Kayano 14 is the opposite set of rules for a reason.
Wrong sock. More ankle is on show with a lower shoe, so a grey sports sock under a black jogger is far more visible than on a taller pair. Low with pants, crew with shorts, plain colours only.
Cream suede in a downpour. Cream Black and White Silver are the two most people reach for and the two that show weather most. Wet suede dries darker and patchy if you leave it. Rotate to the Sharkskin when it rains, and if you get caught out, blot and dry away from a radiator. There is more on how the three finishes wear in our Sharkskin vs White Silver vs Cream Black comparison.
Building your own GEL-1130 outfit
Start with the colourway. Sharkskin wants grey, black or maroon. Cream Black wants cream, stone and brown. White Silver wants black or grey with a white sock. Then decide whether the outfit is loud (maroon, tracksuit) or tonal (grey-on-grey, cream). Then pick the leg: full-length hem on the collar with a break, or shorts with a crew sock. Three decisions. Stop there.
If you would rather see the pairings laid out by colourway, our guide to wearing the GEL-1130 with ASICS sets goes set by set, and the broader post on which ASICS Gel trainers go with which set covers the Kayano 14 and GEL-NYC too. The full fits collection pairs sets and shoes that already work, and our eight full fits built around an ASICS set starts from the set rather than the shoe.
Quick answers
Which GEL-1130 colourway is easiest to style?
Sharkskin. Grey suede sits under black, grey and maroon without planning, and it hides rain and everyday wear better than the two lighter pairs.
Can you wear the GEL-1130 with jeans?
Yes, and more easily than the Kayano 14. The lower midsole means a straight-leg jean sits on the shoe with a clean break rather than bunching. Avoid a heavy taper and keep the sock low.
Does the GEL-1130 work with a full tracksuit?
It is the best trainer in the range for one. The lower profile keeps a heavy, dark tracksuit from looking bottom-heavy, and the suede suits the softer fabric. Sharkskin is the safest choice.
Is the GEL-1130 too plain for a going-out outfit?
No. The all-black woven pant fit with the White Silver pair is the smartest outfit here. If you want a shoe with more going on for evenings, our GEL-NYC styling guide covers the cream pair.
