ASICS GEL-NYC 'Cream White': The Colourway, Up Close

ASICS GEL-NYC in Cream White, leather and mesh upper, side profile

Most people who search for the ASICS GEL-NYC Cream White have already seen it on someone else's feet. It tends to go that way with this colourway. You clock the shape first, then the colour, then you realise it is not white at all. It is warmer than that, and the warmth is the point.

This post is about that one pair. Not the GEL-NYC in general (our complete GEL-NYC guide covers the history, the build and the fit), but the Cream White specifically: what the upper is made of, why cream suits this silhouette better than a flat white would, how it sits next to the white trainers already in your rotation, and what to wear it with.

Short version: it costs £189.99, it is in stock at Tempo in UK 7 to 11, and it is the only GEL-NYC colourway we have on the shelf right now. Long version below.

What you are looking at: the Cream White GEL-NYC

The ASICS 'Cream White' Gel NYC is a mixed-material upper in two closely related tones. Cream and white sit side by side across leather, mesh and suede overlays, with the suede doing most of the visual work around the toe, eyelets and heel. Underneath is the GEL-NYC's usual set-up: GEL cushioning and a TRUSSTIC unit in the midfoot, on tooling borrowed from the Gel-Cumulus 16.

The suede is worth pausing on. Suede overlays are unusual on a retro-style release, and they were on the GEL-NYC from the start. On a bright colourway suede can look a bit fussy. On cream it looks like it belongs, because suede naturally has a soft, slightly matte finish and cream is a soft, slightly matte colour. The materials and the tone agree with each other.

Practical details: £189.99, men's UK sizing 7 to 11, free UK delivery because it clears the £100 threshold, Klarna and Clearpay at checkout.

Why cream is the colourway to have on the GEL-NYC

The GEL-NYC is a rounded shoe. The toe is bulbous rather than pointed, the heel is padded and full, and the midsole curves rather than steps. Compare it to the Gel-Kayano 14, which has sharper lines and more visible tech, and the difference is obvious. The NYC is soft in shape.

Soft shapes suit warm tones. Put a rounded silhouette in bright white or a loud two-tone and it can look a bit inflated, a bit sporty in the wrong way. Put it in cream and the same curves read as considered. It looks like something you chose, not something you were issued.

Cream vs white, on foot

Cream is not a dirty white. It is a distinct tone with yellow and brown in it, and it is consistent across the whole shoe. Dirt is patchy and grey. Your eye can tell the difference at a glance, and so can everyone else's. Next to a bright white pair, the cream GEL-NYC looks intentional. Next to a pair of scuffed white trainers, it looks cleaner, not dirtier, because the tone is even.

Where cream does change things is in what it pulls out of your outfit. White trainers disappear. Cream is warm, so it warms the colours around it and makes cool greys look cooler. It is a shoe you build a look around rather than throw on under anything.

What to wear the cream GEL-NYC with

The colourway is warm, so lead with warm. These are the pairings that work off the shelf, all from the ASICS Core range we stock alongside the trainers. Prices correct at time of writing.

  • The Cream Core T-Shirt Set (£74.99). Tonal, top to bottom. This is the easiest win and the one most people end up buying with the shoe. Keep the socks white so there is a small break at the ankle.
  • The Brown Stone Core Vest Set (£74.99). Darker earth tone against cream. The set does the contrast, the shoe does the lift. Good for warmer months when a vest makes sense.
  • The Maroon Core T-Shirt Set (£74.99). Maroon and cream is a classic combination for a reason. Deep colour up top, warm neutral on foot. Wears well in autumn.
  • The Black Core Woven Pant (£54.99). If you want black on the bottom half, this is the piece. A woven pant has a cleaner line than a jogger and the cream trainer stands out sharply against it.
  • The Black Core Tracksuit (£149.99). Full contrast. Head-to-toe black, cream on the feet. It looks smarter than it has any right to and it is the pairing that photographs best.

Two things to avoid. Cool light grey, which makes the shoe look yellower. And off-white bottoms in a slightly different cream, the one situation where it can look like a mismatch. Go tonal or go contrast, not nearly-matching.

How the cream GEL-NYC ages, and how to keep it

Honest answer: cream suede shows less than pure white suede, and a lot less than white leather. Small scuffs and light dust blend into the tone rather than jumping out, which is one reason cream is easier to live with day to day.

But suede is suede. It absorbs. Rain darkens it temporarily, and anything oily or coloured will stay unless you deal with it quickly. A dark mark is also more visible on cream than it would be on a grey suede GEL-1130.

The single most useful thing you can do is protector spray before first wear. Not after the first walk, before. A good suede and fabric protector, applied evenly, left to dry, ideally two coats. It will not make the shoe waterproof but it will make the first few months much less stressful and it will make cleaning easier when the time comes.

Beyond that: brush the suede dry with a soft brush rather than wet-wiping it, deal with the midsole separately (it can take a damp cloth), and never put the shoe near a radiator to dry. Our GEL-NYC cleaning guide goes through suede, leather and the cream upper in detail.

Sizing the cream GEL-NYC, in brief

Tempo lists the GEL-NYC as true to size, and for narrow-to-normal feet the independent consensus agrees. The caveat is the toe box, which runs tight in both height and width. If you know you have wide feet, or you have found other retro ASICS snug across the front, go half a size up.

It sits lower to the ground than the Kayano 14 and feels firmer underfoot. Full detail, including how it compares to the Kayano 14 footbed, is in our GEL-NYC sizing post. We stock UK 7 to 11 in this colourway.

Why buy this one now

We will be straight with you. The Cream White is the only GEL-NYC colourway at Tempo right now. More may land, and if they do we will list them in new arrivals first. So there is no pretending you are choosing between five NYC options on our shelf today.

But here is the thing. If you had five in front of you, this is the one you would pick anyway. Cream is the colourway that suits the shape, the one that goes with the most from the Core range, and the one that ages most gracefully out of the light options. It is not the compromise pick. It is the pick.

Quick answers

Is the ASICS GEL-NYC Cream White true to size?

Tempo lists it true to size, and that holds for narrow-to-normal feet. The toe box is tight, so wide-footed wearers commonly go half a size up.

Is cream harder to keep clean than white?

No, easier in practice. Cream suede hides light marks better than white. Suede still absorbs stains, so use a protector spray before first wear.

What colours go with the cream GEL-NYC?

Cream, brown stone, maroon and black. Tonal or full contrast both work. Avoid cool light greys and near-match off-whites.

How much is the GEL-NYC Cream White at Tempo?
