ASICS does two half-zips at Tempo. The Black Core Half-Zip at £39.99 and the Black Sport Half-Zip at £29.99. Both are black, both run S to XL, and the whole decision comes down to a tenner.
This guide covers the actual choice: what that £10 gets you, how each layers over a tee, whether a half-zip can carry the top half of an outfit on its own, and whether the Sport Half-Zip Set at £64.99 beats buying separately. For the wider range, start with our complete guide to ASICS clothing.

What the £10 actually buys
We are not going to pretend £10 transforms a garment. It does not. Both of these do the same job: a zip at the neck you can open when you warm up and close when you stop.
What the extra tenner buys is range membership. The Core Half-Zip sits in the same Core family as the Core T-Shirts and vests, the Core Woven shorts and the Core Woven Pant. If you own several Core pieces already, it is the one that will read as part of the same wardrobe rather than a near miss, and near misses in all-black are more obvious than people expect.
The Sport Half-Zip is the sensible buy if this is your first ASICS layer, if you want it purely for training, or if you are heading for the set. £29.99 for a black half-zip worn twice a week is a good use of money.
Our honest split: if the half-zip is going to live in a gym bag, take the Sport and put the £10 towards a second pair of shorts. If it is going to be worn out of the house alongside other ASICS pieces, take the Core.
Layering it over a tee
This is what a half-zip is for, and it is the reason it beats a hoodie for training. Over a Core T-Shirt at £34.99, you keep it zipped for the first ten minutes, drop the zip when you start working, and never have to pull anything over your head.
Two rules make the layer look intentional. Keep the tee no longer than the half-zip, because a tee hanging below the hem is the fastest way to look like you got dressed in the dark. And if you want the tee to be part of the look, give it some colour. Black on black reads clean but flat, so a Maroon, Vital Green or Cream tee showing at the neck does a lot of work.
Over a Core Vest works too, and is the better call for indoor training in winter. There is more on that in our guide to the ASICS vests.
Wearing it as the whole top half
A half-zip on its own, zipped up, is a perfectly good top, and the most useful piece in the range for that awkward stretch of the British year when a jacket is too much and a t-shirt is not enough.
Zip position matters more than anything else. All the way up is the cleanest look and the most flattering on a broader chest. Halfway down is the most relaxed. All the way down turns the half-zip into a layer rather than the main event, and at that point you may as well have taken a Core Windrunner at £89.99 and had the wind protection too.
Below the waist, black goes with everything the range does. The obvious pairings are the Black Core Woven Pant at £54.99 for a full black look, the Steel Grey Core Woven Pant at £39.99 if you want the two halves to read separately, or the Black 7in shorts at £39.99 in warmer weather. Our guide to building an outfit from separates goes further into which of those combinations actually work.
The Sport Half-Zip Set
The Black Sport Half-Zip Set is £64.99. The half-zip on its own is £29.99, so the rest of the set is effectively £35.
That stacks up against the rest of the range. A Core T-Shirt Set is £74.99 against £34.99 for the t-shirt alone, a similar premium for the second half. Check the product page for what is included, then decide on this basis: if you would have bought a bottom half anyway, the set is the cheaper route. If you already own black bottoms, and most people who train do, buy the half-zip alone and keep the £35.
You can see the sets alongside each other in the ASICS sets collection, and our ASICS sets buying guide covers the wider set range.
Sizing
Both run S to XL, so size for what goes underneath. Wearing it over a tee most of the time, take your usual size. Wearing it as a standalone top, and between sizes, size down rather than up. The sizing guide has the detail, and our ASICS sizing guide covers the range generally.
Who should skip both
If you train outdoors in genuinely bad weather, a half-zip is not your layer. Buy the Steel Grey Core Windrunner at £59.99 or the black at £89.99 instead, and read our Core Windrunner guide. And if you only ever train indoors in a warm gym, you will get more out of another Core T-Shirt than out of a layer you take off in the first five minutes.

Quick answers
What is the difference between the ASICS Core and Sport half-zips?
£10 and which range they belong to. The Core Half-Zip at £39.99 matches the rest of the Core pieces. The Sport Half-Zip at £29.99 is the cheaper way in and is the one available as a set.
Which ASICS half-zip should I buy for the gym?
The Sport Half-Zip at £29.99. For a layer that spends most of its life in a bag and gets taken off ten minutes into a session, the cheaper one is the better buy.
Do ASICS half-zips come in any colour other than black?
Not currently. Both the Core and the Sport half-zip are black, so this is a fit and price decision rather than a colour one. Colour comes from the tee underneath.
Is the Sport Half-Zip Set worth it?
At £64.99 against £29.99 for the half-zip alone, the rest of the set works out at around £35, which is in line with what the second half costs across the ASICS sets. Worth it if you need the bottoms, not if you already own black ones.
What size ASICS half-zip should I order?
Your usual size if you will wear it over a t-shirt. Both run S to XL, and if you are between sizes and want it as a standalone top, size down.
