Put the two boxes side by side and the choice looks obvious. The Kayano 14 is taller, shinier and £30 to £60 more. The GEL-1130 is lower, quieter and cheaper. What the Gel-Kayano 14 and GEL-1130 have in common
More than you might think. The Kayano 14 was designed by Hidenori Yamashita, the first Kayano not designed by Toshikazu Kayano himself, and its brief was "flash", carried through the colours, lines and silhouette. The 1130 arrived the same year as a more accessible running option than the GT-2160 and the Kayano 14, borrowing design language and tech from the Kayano. From the side, the family resemblance is obvious in the panel shapes and the sculpted midsole.
Underfoot they share GEL cushioning at the heel and forefoot, the TRUSSTIC midfoot support system, and a high-abrasion rubber outsole. Neither is a soft, sinking shoe. Both are stable and structured.
Both were revived for the retro-runner moment. The Kayano 14 relaunched in December 2020, with Kiko Kostadinov choosing it over the Kayano 13 because its design "made it look faster", and the JJJJound collaboration in August 2022 sold out and cemented it in fashion. Profile and bulk
This is the biggest split. The Kayano 14 has a chunky, raised retro midsole. It sits high, looks heavy from the side, and makes its presence known at the bottom of an outfit. The 1130 uses a lower-profile chunky midsole. Still visibly a retro runner, but it sits closer to the ground and takes up less visual space. Side by side, the Kayano looks like the parent, the 1130 the trimmer sibling.
Upper materials
The Kayano 14 upper is mesh with leather and synthetic overlays. On Tempo's colourways that means shine, the layered look people associate with the Y2K revival. The 1130 colourways at Tempo are suede and mesh. Suede reads softer and more matte, and the Sharkskin grey has a texture the Kayano's overlays do not.
Fit

The 1130 is listed true to size at Tempo as well, but the widely reported experience is that it runs slightly snug and narrow through the midfoot. The Kayano 14 at Tempo runs from £189.99 to £199.99. The 1130 runs from £139.99 to £169.99 (prices correct at time of writing). The gap between the cheapest of each is £50. Real money, but not the whole reason to pick one, and the 1130 is not the Kayano with things taken away.

The colourways we stock
Three of each, and the split in character shows in the colours too. The Fjord Grey Kayano 14 is white mesh with cool grey overlays, the most contrast of the three. The White Light Navy Kayano 14 is a two-tone that reads a little sharper. The White Ivory Kayano 14 is tonal white and the quietest way into a shoe that is never quiet.
The Sharkskin GEL-1130 is grey suede and mesh and the most textured pair on either side. The White Silver GEL-1130 is tonal white with silver, the closest thing to a direct rival for the White Ivory Kayano. The Cream Black GEL-1130 is the warmest colour across all six pairs and the cheapest.
How each one wears with an ASICS set
A set is a matched top and bottom in one colour, so the trainer is the only thing breaking it up. This is where the decision usually gets made.
The Kayano 14 is the loud anchor. Tall, shiny, and it fills the space at the bottom of the leg. With a black or grey set the eye goes straight to the shoes, and that is the point. Wear the hem sitting on top of the shoe rather than over it, so the height shows.
The 1130 disappears under a hem. A woven pant or jogger falls over the collar of the shoe and the whole thing reads clean and low. With a cream or stone set the Cream Black 1130 sits inside the palette rather than fighting it. If you want the trainers to belong rather than perform, the 1130 does that better.

Buy the Kayano 14 if you want the shoe with the story. It is the design Kostadinov picked, the one JJJJound sold out, the one people recognise across a room. Buy it if you want height, shine and a trainer that leads the outfit. Buy it if you have a normal-to-wide foot and want a true-to-size purchase with no second-guessing. And buy it if £189.99 to £199.99 sits inside your budget without stretching it.
Buy the 1130 if you want the same GEL and TRUSSTIC package in a lower, cleaner shape. Buy it if you wear sets and joggers most days and want the trainer under the hem rather than shouting over it. Buy it if you prefer suede. Buy it if you would rather spend £139.99 to £169.99 and put the difference toward a set. Just check your width, and go half a size up if you are wide.
Buy both because they do different jobs. The Kayano for the days you want to be seen in the shoe. The 1130 for the days you want to be seen in the outfit.
