Most people who ask about ASICS Gel-Kayano 14 sizing are asking one question in disguise: is this the trainer where I need to go half a size up? For the Kayano 14, the honest answer is no, not for most feet. It fits true to size. Tempo lists it true to size, the independent consensus among wearers agrees, and half sizes are stocked, so you can buy the size you normally wear and expect it to be right.
The longer version matters if you have wide feet, a high instep, wear thick socks through winter, or you are coming from the GEL-1130 or GEL-NYC and expecting the same fit. This post covers all of that. For the whole picture of the shoe, start with the complete UK guide to the Gel-Kayano 14.
The short answer on Kayano 14 sizing
Buy your usual UK size. If you are a UK 9 in most trainers, you are a UK 9 in the Kayano 14. All ASICS trainers at Tempo are men's UK sizing, and half sizes are available across the range, so there is no rounding up or down.
The only people who should think about going up half a size are those with genuinely wide feet or a high instep, and even then it is a judgement call. Going up when you do not need to is the more common mistake. A Kayano 14 that is half a size too long lets the heel lift, and the whole point of the shoe (locked-in, supportive, cushioned) disappears.
How the Kayano 14 is built and why that affects fit
The Kayano 14 was released in 2008 as a running shoe, and the upper is built like one: mesh with leather and synthetic overlays. Those two materials behave very differently on your foot, and that is most of what you need to know about fit.
- The mesh gives. Across the forefoot and toe box, the mesh panels stretch and mould over the first few wears. If the shoe feels a touch close over the top of your toes on day one, that usually eases.
- The overlays do not. The leather and synthetic sections around the eyestay, midfoot and heel hold your foot in place. They soften slightly but do not stretch in width. If they feel tight across the widest part of your foot, that will not change.
- The midsole is chunky and raised. The GEL cushioning in the heel and forefoot and the TRUSSTIC midfoot support sit in a thick retro midsole with a fairly generous footbed, one reason the shoe suits wider feet better than the GEL-NYC does.
- The heel is structured. The heel counter holds firm. Good for support, bad if you buy too long, because nothing stops the heel sliding.
Judge fit on the overlays, not the mesh. If the mesh feels snug and the overlays feel fine, stay true to size. If the overlays feel tight across the ball of the foot, consider half a size up. For how the whole shoe feels day to day, the Gel-Kayano 14 review goes into comfort and build in detail.
When to size up (and when not to)
Consider half a size up if:
- You have wide feet and other trainers regularly feel tight across the ball of the foot.
- You have a high instep and the lacing on most trainers ends up loose at the bottom and tight at the top.
- You will wear these mainly through winter with thick socks. A thick sock takes up real room, and the Kayano 14's midfoot does not have much spare.
- You are between sizes and your longer foot measures nearer the top of the range. Fit the bigger foot.
Stay true to size if:
- You have narrow or average feet. Going up will only give you a loose heel.
- You wear standard trainer socks most of the year.
- You are between sizes but your foot is nearer the smaller end. The mesh will give you the little bit of extra room you need over the toes.
Rule of thumb: unsure and wide-footed, go up. Unsure and not, stay put. For ASICS sizing across the board, including sets and joggers, the existing ASICS sizing guide covers apparel too.
Measuring your foot properly
Half the sizing questions we see would be answered by a proper measurement. Do it like this:
- Measure late in the day. Feet swell as the day goes on, and you want the shoe to fit at five o'clock, not eight in the morning.
- Stand up. Your foot spreads and lengthens under load.
- Heel to a wall. Stand on a sheet of paper with your heel flat against a wall. Mark the tip of your longest toe (which is not always the big toe). Measure from the wall to the mark.
- Do both feet. Use the longer one.
- Wear the socks you will actually wear. If these are winter shoes, measure in winter socks. If they are summer shoes, measure in trainer socks.
Then compare your measurement against the Tempo sizing guide rather than guessing. It is worth doing even if you think you know your size. Plenty of people have worn a half size too small for years without realising.
Sizes stocked at Tempo by colourway
The three Kayano 14 colourways at Tempo do not all run through the same size range, so check the one you want first. Availability moves, so the product page is always the final word.
| Colourway | UK sizes listed | Price |
|---|---|---|
| Fjord Grey Gel-Kayano 14 | UK 6.5 to 11 | £199.99 |
| White Light Navy Gel-Kayano 14 | UK 6 to 11 | £194.99 |
| White Ivory Gel-Kayano 14 | UK 6.5 to 10.5 | £189.99 |
(Prices correct at time of writing.)
The White Light Navy is the only one that goes down to a UK 6. The White Ivory tops out at UK 10.5, so if you are a UK 11 and want a mostly white pair, the Fjord Grey with its white mesh upper is the nearest alternative. If you are choosing on looks rather than size, the colourway comparison puts them side by side.
How the Kayano 14 fit compares to the GEL-1130 and GEL-NYC
All three are listed true to size at Tempo, but they do not feel the same on foot. If you own one and are buying another, do not assume the size transfers.
GEL-1130. The 1130 borrowed its design language and tech from the Kayano 14, but it sits on a lower-profile midsole and the consensus is that it fits slightly snug and narrow through the midfoot. Wide-footed wearers commonly go half a size up in the 1130 where they would not in the Kayano 14. If your 1130 is a half size up, your true size is more likely to be right in the Kayano. The GEL-1130 sizing post covers that shoe on its own terms.
GEL-NYC. The NYC is true to size for narrow-to-normal feet, but its toe box runs tight in height and width, and half a size up is the usual recommendation for wide feet. It sits lower to the ground and feels firmer underfoot. The Kayano 14 has a wider footbed and more arch support, so it is the more forgiving of the two for width or instep issues. Read the GEL-NYC sizing breakdown for the toe box detail.
Put simply: of the three, the Kayano 14 is the one least likely to need sizing up.
If it does not fit
This is not a drama. Try them on indoors, on carpet, with the socks you plan to wear, and walk around for a few minutes. If they are wrong, keep the box and everything in it and follow the steps on the refund policy page. Do not wear them outside first, because a scuffed sole changes the conversation.
Better still, ask before you buy. If you are between sizes, have wide feet, or are switching from another ASICS model, send a message through the contact page with your usual size and what you normally wear. It is quicker than ordering two and sending one back.
Quick answers
Does the ASICS Gel-Kayano 14 run big or small?
Neither. It fits true to size for most people, and Tempo lists it that way. Buy your normal UK size unless you have wide feet or a high instep.
Should I size up in the Kayano 14 for wide feet?
Possibly, by half a size. The mesh stretches but the overlays do not, so if trainers are usually tight across the ball of your foot, half up is reasonable. Narrow and average feet should stay true to size.
Is the Kayano 14 the same size as the GEL-1130 or GEL-NYC?
Not in feel. The 1130 is snugger through the midfoot and the NYC has a tighter toe box. The Kayano 14 has a wider footbed and is the least likely of the three to need sizing up.
Do you stock half sizes in the Kayano 14?
Yes. Half sizes run from UK 6 up to UK 11 depending on the colourway. Check the table above or the product page.
