Are the ASICS Gel-Kayano 14 Comfortable for Walking All Day?

The question usually arrives in the same shape. You like how the Gel-Kayano 14 looks, you have eight hours on your feet coming up, and you want to know if the shoe will still feel good at 6pm. So, are the ASICS Gel-Kayano 14 comfortable for walking all day? For most people, yes. It is a 2008 stability running shoe with proper cushioning under it, which is why it holds up on long days better than most fashion trainers.

That said, "comfortable" depends on your feet, your size choice and what you compare it to. This post gives the plain answer, the caveats, and how it stacks up against the GEL-1130 and GEL-NYC. For the full picture on the shoe, our complete Gel-Kayano 14 guide covers history, fit and every colourway we stock.

The short answer

Yes, for the majority of wearers. The consensus among people who use the Kayano 14 as a daily walker is that the cushioning holds up for long stretches, the midfoot support slows foot fatigue, and the wider footbed gives toes room as the day goes on. It is one of the more forgiving retro runners for standing and walking.

The asterisk: it is a chunky shoe with a layered upper that never feels light, and the overlays need a few wears to soften. Get the size right and that stops mattering. Our Gel-Kayano 14 review goes deeper on build and who it suits.

What makes the Kayano 14 comfortable, in plain terms

  • GEL cushioning at heel and forefoot. Walking loads the heel first and then the ball of the foot, so GEL under both is the point. Plenty of retro trainers only cushion the heel, and you feel that in the forefoot by mid-afternoon.
  • TRUSSTIC midfoot support. A support piece under the arch that stops the shoe twisting and folding under the midfoot, which is where tiredness sets in when you stand for hours.
  • More arch support and a wider footbed than the GEL-NYC. This is the widely reported comparison and the most useful fact for all-day wear. More room across the footbed means less pressure as feet swell slightly through the day.
  • Chunky midsole with a high-abrasion rubber outsole. The raised midsole puts material between you and pavement, and the outsole is built to take miles. Comfort in month six is what you are paying for.

Walking is a gentler version of the job this shoe was built for. The Fjord Grey Gel Kayano 14 is the same underneath as every other colourway, so pick on looks and let the tech do its work.

The caveats

  • It is not a light-feeling shoe. The retro midsole and layered upper give it presence. Most people stop noticing after a week; some never love it.
  • The upper is breathable but it is not a slipper. The mesh base lets air through, but the leather and synthetic overlays give structure. That keeps your foot located on long days, but the shoe does not collapse softly around the foot.
  • Break-in for the overlays. The overlays start slightly stiff around the eyestay and heel. Give it a few shorter wears before the first full day out.
  • Sizing matters more the longer you are on your feet. A slightly tight pair is fine for two hours and unpleasant by hour six, once feet warm up. Read our Gel-Kayano 14 sizing post before you order if you are between sizes.

Where the Kayano 14 works, and where it does not

  • City days. Museum, lunch, shops, a long walk home. Hard pavement is where GEL under heel and forefoot pays off most.
  • Airports and travel. Long terminals, queues, then hours sitting with swollen feet. The wider footbed helps.
  • Standing jobs. Retail, hospitality, events. The midfoot support matters most here, because standing still tires the arch faster than walking does.
  • Dog walks. Daily miles on pavement and park paths. The high-abrasion outsole shrugs this off; the mesh will get grubby, so pick a colour you are happy to clean.
  • Holiday. A week walking a new city is the classic all-day test. Break them in before you go and pack a second pair to rotate.

Where it is not the right pick: serious running today. You are buying a retro reissue for how it looks and walks, not to train in. And formal settings. It is a chunky, visibly technical trainer, at home with joggers and jeans, not tailoring.

Kayano 14 vs GEL-1130 vs GEL-NYC on all-day comfort

All three share GEL cushioning and a TRUSSTIC support piece, so none is a bad walker. The differences come down to height, width and structure.

Shoe Cushioning and support Midsole Fit for long days Tempo price
Gel-Kayano 14 GEL heel and forefoot, TRUSSTIC. More arch support and a wider footbed than the NYC Chunky, raised retro midsole True to size. Roomiest of the three across the footbed £189.99 to £199.99
GEL-1130 GEL heel and forefoot, TRUSSTIC (borrowed from the Kayano 14) Lower-profile chunky midsole than the Kayano 14 Tempo lists true to size; consensus is slightly snug and narrow through the midfoot, wide feet often go half up £139.99 to £169.99
GEL-NYC GEL, TRUSSTIC. Sits lower and feels firmer underfoot than the Kayano 14 Gel-Cumulus 16 tooling True to size for narrow-to-normal feet; toe box runs tight in height and width, wide feet go half up £189.99

Prices correct at time of writing.

The plain reading: if all-day comfort is the priority and your feet are average to wide, the Kayano 14 is the safest of the three. The GEL-1130 is a strong walker for the money and lower to the ground, but the narrower midfoot matters on long days; our Kayano 14 vs GEL-1130 comparison lays that out. The GEL-NYC is firmer and lower, and the tighter toe box is the thing to check first. We look at that in whether the GEL-NYC is comfortable for walking, and the two shoes go head to head in the Kayano 14 vs GEL-NYC comparison.

Getting the size right for long days

The Kayano 14 fits true to size, by Tempo's listing and by independent consensus, and half sizes are available. For a long day:

  1. Order your usual UK size if your feet are normal width.
  2. If you are between sizes, or your feet swell, take the half size up. Room at the toe is worth more than a snug heel eight hours in.
  3. Try them on in the afternoon, when feet are largest, in the socks you actually walk in.
  4. Check for a thumb's width in front of the toes.

Our sizing guide covers the general approach for every ASICS trainer we stock. Ranges differ slightly by colourway: the White Light Navy Gel Kayano 14 runs UK 6 to 11, the Fjord Grey runs UK 6.5 to 11 and the White Ivory runs UK 6.5 to 10.5. All ASICS trainers at Tempo are men's UK sizing. If a pair arrives and the size is wrong, our refund policy page has the details.

Making any trainer last longer on your feet

Not specific to the Kayano 14, but this is where most all-day discomfort comes from.

  • Right size first. No sock or insole rescues a shoe that is a half size out.
  • Proper socks. Cushioned crew or quarter socks, not thin liners. Cotton holds sweat; a sport blend is better past a few hours.
  • Lacing. Firm through the midfoot, looser over the toes. Heel lifting? Use the top eyelet for a runner's loop. Top of foot aching? Skip an eyelet over the sore spot.
  • Rotate pairs. A midsole recovers overnight. Two pairs alternated feel better and last longer than one worn daily.
  • Insoles if needed. The stock insole suits most people. If you have flat feet or arch issues, a supportive insole makes more difference than swapping shoes.
  • Break them in. Three or four short wears before the first long day.

Quick answers

Are the Gel-Kayano 14 good for standing all day at work?

For most people, yes. The TRUSSTIC midfoot support and GEL at heel and forefoot are the features that matter for standing, and the wider footbed helps as feet swell. Size correctly and break them in first.

Do the Gel-Kayano 14 need breaking in?

A little. The mesh base is comfortable straight away, but the leather and synthetic overlays start slightly stiff. Three or four shorter wears is usually enough before a full day out.

Should I size up in the Gel-Kayano 14 for walking?

Not by default. It fits true to size. Go half a size up only if you are between sizes or your feet swell noticeably through the day.

Is the Kayano 14 or the GEL-NYC better for walking?

The Kayano 14 has more arch support and a wider footbed, and the NYC sits lower and feels firmer. For all-day walking with average to wide feet, the Kayano 14 is the safer choice.
