ASICS Set vs Tracksuit vs Tri-Set: What You Actually Get

ASICS use three words for things that overlap, and the ASICS sets collection does not make the distinction obvious at a glance. A "set" might be two pieces or three. A "tracksuit" is a specific pairing. A "tri-set" is always three. People order the wrong one, which is avoidable.

Here is the whole thing in one sentence. A set is two pieces, a tracksuit is a jacket and a long pant, and a tri-set is any of those plus a top. Everything else is detail about which pieces and how much.

This article lays out exactly what arrives in each box, what each one costs, and which format makes sense for what you actually want to wear.

The three formats

Set

Two pieces that are designed to go together. In the ASICS Core range a set is usually a top and a bottom, so a tee with shorts, or a vest with shorts. The Black Core T-Shirt Set at £74.99 is the template. Tee and shorts, matched.

Sets are the lightest and cheapest way into the range. They are summer-weight and they do not include outerwear.

Tracksuit

Jacket plus long pant. That is the definition and it does not vary. The Black Core Tracksuit at £149.99 is a Core Windrunner jacket and a Core Woven Pant.

No top is included. You wear your own tee under it. That is normal and nobody thinks twice about it.

Tri-Set

Three pieces. Always a top, a bottom and a third piece, which in practice means the jacket is included. The Black Core Tracksuit Tri-Set at £174.99 is the windrunner, the woven pant and a tee. The Black Core Windrunner Tri-Set at £164.99 swaps the long pant for shorts.

Tri-sets are the best value per piece in the range, and we will show why in a moment.

What arrives in each box

Product Jacket Top Bottom Price
Core T-Shirt Set No Tee Shorts £74.99
Core Vest Set (Aegean Blue) No Vest Shorts £59.99
Core Windrunner Set Yes No Shorts £129.99
Core Tracksuit Yes No Woven pant £149.99
Core Windrunner Tri-Set Yes Tee Shorts £164.99
Core Tracksuit Tri-Set Yes Tee Woven pant £174.99

Note the Windrunner Set at £129.99. It has a jacket but no top. That catches people out, because the name sounds like a complete outfit. It is a jacket and shorts.

Where the value sits

Work it out against the separates. The Core Windrunner is £89.99, the Core Woven Pant is £54.99 and the Black Core T-Shirt is £34.99.

All three as separates is £179.97. The Core Tracksuit Tri-Set with those same three pieces is £174.99. You save about £5, which is not dramatic, but it is the only format in the range where the bundle beats the parts.

The two-piece tracksuit at £149.99 is £5.01 more than the equivalent separates. The sets sit roughly level with their parts too.

So the honest answer on value is: tri-sets are slightly cheaper than separates, everything else is roughly the same. Buy the format that matches what you want to wear, not the one you think saves money. The saving is not the deciding factor.

Which format suits what

Buy a set if

You want something for warm weather, or you want to test the range cheaply. £74.99 for a tee and shorts is low commitment, and the colour choice is far wider. There are vest versions too, like the Brown Stone Core Vest Set at £74.99, for genuinely hot days. Our best ASICS sets for summer piece goes through the options.

Buy a tracksuit if

You want the classic jacket and long pant, you already own plenty of tees, and you want something for autumn through spring. This is the format most people picture when they search for a tracksuit.

Buy a tri-set if

You want a complete outfit from one order. Nothing to think about, nothing to match. If you are new to the range and want the full look, this is the one.

Buy separates if

You want mixed sizes across pieces, you want a jacket in black and shorts in a colour, or you already own half of it. We have written a full piece on building an ASICS outfit from separates.

A note on shorts versus pants

The Windrunner Set and Windrunner Tri-Set come with shorts. The Tracksuit and Tracksuit Tri-Set come with the woven pant. That is the only difference between those pairs, and it is £20 either way.

Shorts come in 5in and 7in lengths. Neither is more or less formal, it is about how much leg you want on show. The 5in vs 7in guide has the detail.

If you live in the UK and want one purchase to cover most of the year, take the woven pant. Shorts are a second purchase, not a first one.

Sizing across all formats

Identical. The Core range is true to size whether you buy a set, a tracksuit, a tri-set or separates. Size up one on the jacket only if you intend to layer a hoodie under it. Full detail in the tracksuit sizing guide and the set sizing guide.
